Conservative Congressman Rob Wittman, has found a new platform for his bid for reelection. He is scheduled to read the Emancipation Proclamation at, George Washington Birthplace National Monument on June 19, 2010.

One of Virginia’s most Conservative Congressman, Rob Wittman is scheduled to read the Emancipation Proclamation at George Washington Birthplace National Monument as part of a Juneteenth Celebration. Juneteenth is an annual event celebrated by descendants of freed slaves from Texas. The slaves labored two years after the end of the Civil War. The event is generally celebrated throughout the nation on or around June Nineteenth.

Congressmen Wittman, serves Virginia’s 1st Congressional District, and is a staunch conservative. It is doubtful that Congressmen Wittman would have voted for the abolition of slavery, given his views. The descendants of the slaves and servants, who toiled at the Washington Homestead, were recently informed of Congressmen Wittmans’ participation. It may be a strategy to win him votes in the upcoming Senate election, and one, which may backfire. According to Superintendent Lucy Lawliss, the Congressmen will speak at the event, which is supposed to be a celebration by descendants of the Slaves and Servants of the Washington Homestead.

In attendance will be Anita Wills, the first descendant of Indentured Servants and slaves to trace her ancestry to George Washington Birthplace. Her ancestors, Mary (born 1730), and Patty (born 1750), were two of three generations who toiled at the Washington Plantation. Juneteenth is a day of freedom for slaves from Texas, who labored for two years after the Civil War. The event is now celebrated throughout America, in the African American Community.
