Who Do Police Stop More Blacks or Whites

Black people are four times more likely than whites to be stopped by a police man. A chief has admitted that he has committed institutionalised racism before.

The head of Greater Manchester Police, Chief Constable David Wilmot, caused an uproar at conference when he admitted his force had "overt" and "internalised" racism.

He was speaking at a news conference during part of the inquiry into the killing of Stephen Lawrence, the 18-year-old black student stabbed to death by a gang of white youths in a racist attack in Eltham, south east London in 1993.

Statistics for 1996-97 show that GMP stopped and searched 45,020 people. In terms of population this represents 17 out of 1,000 white people, but 73 out of 1,000 blacks and Asians.

These statistics show you that police obviously stop more black people than they do white.

I don't think the statistics tell everything, for example, are this statistic based on people who were stopped and searched because there was already reason to suspect they were involved in some sort of crime, because they were attending protests or were they isolated searches just because the police thought they looked suspicious at the time? At some protests everyone attending is searched, and if there is a higher percentage of the black population attending the protest then the statistic would be misleading. However, I suspect there is some element of the latter - that the police are more suspicious of people of different colours. If this is the case it is very worrying that even today there is still such a bias in law enforcement.
